Muladhara: The Root Chakra

The first Chakra is called Muladhara, or the Root Chakra .

Element:  Earth

Muladhara is symbolised as a lotus with four petals and is the color RED.  It is located at the base of the spine between the anus and sexual organs -- your root, basically.  Two words that describe the Root Chakra best are survival and security, it is related with the gonads and the adrenals.  Easily put your first chakra is responsible for the fight-or-flight response when survival is under threat.  Muladhara is related to instinct, security, survival and also to basic human potentiality.  This is also where your dormant Kundalini energy is stored.

Organ/Gland association:  Organs of elimination (colon, etc)

Yoga Exercises to strengthen/open chakra: Crow Pose, Chair Pose, Body Drops, Frog Pose, Front Stretches, Lying on Stomach, Root Lock.

Best words to describe characteristics of strong/open Root Chakra: Foundation, survival, security, habit, self-acceptance.
